How Down syndrome and GiGi’s Playhouse helped her find her lifelong passion…

A NEIGHBOR CHANGES THE COURSE OF HER LIFE

As a young girl, I did not have an ideal childhood. Growing up in an abusive home, I often felt unheard and, at times, unloved. I was fortunate to have neighbors that would change my life forever. At 11 years old, I remember my parents friends’ talking about a neighbor family whose son was born with Down syndrome. They spoke about it as if something horrible had happened to this family. It was just the opposite. It was a blessing. I went to visit my new neighbor and all I remember seeing was this beautiful little baby boy. I didn’t know then that he would open up a whole new world to me. As I held him, I could immediately feel love.  It was an unconditional love that, as a child myself, I needed. As he grew older, the family asked me to babysit him in addition to their older son. I never saw Brett as different. All I saw was this blond-haired, blue-eyed little boy whose smile and laugh lit up my world. The family took me to many events and introduced me to the world of Down syndrome. All of these beautiful little miracles surrounded me with love, laughter and acceptance. I knew in those moments what I wanted to do with my life. I did not see individuals with Down syndrome as different. I saw them as the most loving genuine souls that I had ever known.

THE DISCOVERY OF GIGI’S PLAYHOUSE

I went to school to become a Special Education teacher and always volunteered for organizations but I was still missing a piece to my puzzle. I worked with a friend who introduced me to GiGi’s Playhouse about six years ago. I was a volunteer for years and I am proud to say that I am now an employee. I love coming to work. I am welcomed with more love than I could ever imagine. I get to meet amazing families that share their lives with me.

SERENDIPITY STRIKES

I was recently asked how I became involved with GiGi’s Playhouse. I told my story and to my surprise the woman I was talking to knew Brett and the family from my childhood! She was able to help me reconnect with them and I was able to thank them for sharing the gift of their son with me.  Lots of happy tears were shed.  Brett made all of our lives better. There are no chance meetings. Always listen to your heart. God leads you right where you need to be. My heart led me to GiGi’s Playhouse. This is where I need to be. It is my passion and gift in life to show the world how beautiful Down syndrome is.
