Healthy Meals and Memories!

Met our awesome GiGi’s Adult Kitchen volunteer Ana!

Hi! My name is Ana Higgins and currently I have the privilege of leading the Gigi’s Kitchen adult classes this summer as part of my dietetic internship. To tell you a little bit about myself, I am from Clarendon Hills, Illinois and I acquired my undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. During my time at Bradley University, I was a site leader for my campus’s service/volunteer organization called SERVE, was the Director of Campus Activities for my sorority (Chi Omega), a mentor for “Big Brothers Big Sisters Peoria,” held the position as the Vice President of the Dietetic Student association, volunteered as nutrition assistant at the Illinois Cancer Society, and taught nutrition classes to underprivileged youth through 4-H. Currently, I completing a combined dietetic internship and masters program at Benedictine University in Lisle. My plans following graduation in December are to successfully pass the Registered Dietitian exam and to then work as a clinical dietitian.

“Throughout my time hosting GiGi’s Kitchen Adult, I have greatly enjoyed working alongside the participants to create delicious recipes, sharing my knowledge of nutrition, and sharing countless laughs. I am so grateful for this experience, the incredible individuals I have met, and all that GiGi’s Playhouse has to offer.”

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30-1pm Ana and our GiGi’s Playhouse participants together cook delicious healthy meals such as veggie burgers, humus, gluten free orange chicken, and egg free/gluten free fried rice.

“I enjoy cooking with my friends and learning new recipes”- Angel Vazquez

GiGi’s Kitchen is designed to emphasize the importance of health and wellness through nutrition education, kitchen safety, food preparation, social activities, and a shared meal/snack. Participants will learn about and progress through skills including measurements, food handling, knife skills, ingredient identification, palette expansion, and nutrition. Participants will be introduced to various cooking techniques and will increase their self-esteem and self-confidence with their peers!

“I really enjoyed meeting new friends, socializing with friends, and making healthy meals that I can make at home with my family”- Aubrey Soukup
