Family Speaker: Sexuality and Intimacy Part 2 @ 6 pm CT

May 13 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Part 2: Participant Session (18 years +)

Please join GiGi’s Playhouse Hillsborough and their occupational therapy interns, Arianna and Lauren, for a 2-part virtual workshop on sexuality and intimacy!

Sexuality is a fundamental part of the human experience and is therefore a basic right of all humans, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). However, many individuals with IDD experience restricted access to adequate, appropriate sexual education. One reason for the lack of exposure to sexual education is that both professionals and caregivers of individuals with IDD report feelings of discomfort surrounding the topic of sexuality, as well as insufficient knowledge to provide sexual education. The purpose of this workshop is to provide caregivers with the necessary tools to encourage their children to make informed decisions about sexuality and intimacy.

The first session will be geared towards caregivers. We will explore various topics of importance with regards to sexuality including, but not limited to: forming and maintaining relationships, navigating puberty, consent, safe sexual practices, privacy, sexual identity, reproduction, and dating with supervision.

The second session will be open to participants to allow a comfortable space for members to ask questions regarding sexuality and intimacy. Topics discussed during this session will be based upon areas of concern identified during the caregiver’s session. Occupational therapy interns will emphasize that participants are in a safe environment where they can openly discuss sex and intimacy. We will explore various topics of importance with regards to sexuality including, but not limited to: public/private behaviors, consent, how to respond to pressure situations, how to say no, recognizing when someone is comfortable/uncomfortable, and ingredients of a healthy relationship.

We look forward to exploring this important topic together and learning from one another!
