Note from Executive Director: Celebrating an Incredible Down Syndrome Awareness Month
What a month it has been at GiGi’s Playhouse Fargo! This October, in celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month (DSAM), we took a fresh approach to deeply connect with our community, partners, and families, ensuring they had access to resources to support them every day.
A conversation I had with the Executive Director at the Peace Academy really resonated with me. She pointed out that while we put so much energy into professional development, we sometimes overlook personal development as parents. That insight shaped our approach to this month’s programming, emphasizing self-development as well as skill-building for our families.
A heartfelt thank you to Trisha Stibbe from Inclusion Ink., who provided invaluable IEP guidance for early learners and kindergartens. Trisha’s dedication extends far beyond her role as a board member – her support empowers families to think creatively and proactively about their children’s education. We were also thrilled to welcome Melissa Marshall from Dale Carnegie of North Dakota and NW Minnesota for a social skills training that was nothing short of magical. Melissa helped our participants master skills like eye contact, handshakes, and conversation cues, making these essential moments of connection accessible to everyone.
October was also a month of incredible community partnerships. Our team had the opportunity to join Microsoft for GIVE month, where we hosted activities for their employees to understand the challenges related to low muscle tone and the purpose behind our programs. Additionally, we launched VNL Cares in partnership with Valley News Live, who will be spotlighting GiGi’s Playhouse Fargo each week leading up to our Impact Day on December 10th. This is an incredible chance for our community to learn more about the support and resources we offer to families. Below are the stories they have created so far.
Another highlight this month was the official launch of GiGi’s on the Go in Oakes, North Dakota! By meeting families where they are, we brought our programming directly to rural communities, celebrating milestones, and sharing personal stories through our “About Me” theme. None of this would have been possible without the enthusiastic support from our partners BCBSND Caring Foundation, FM Area Foundation and in Oakes, Growing Small Towns and the Knodel family. Stay tuned for more programs in Oakes coming soon.
October brought joy, growth, and inspiration to everyone involved. We reached a record number of participation hours – matching what we achieved in all of quarter four last year, and we are just getting started! To everyone who supports us, introduces new families, or reconnects with us – THANK YOU!
Together, we are changing the way the world views Down syndrome and promoting global acceptance for all.
