World Down Syndrome Day

On most calendars, March 21st doesn’t stand out. But, here at GiGi’s Playhouse Fargo, 3/21 is special. That’s because it’s World Down Syndrome Day!

Down syndrome occurs when there are 3 copies of the 21st chromosome, instead of 2. So, celebrating on the 21st day of the 3rd month just makes sense. But, what’s a celebration without people? That’s where you come in!

This year, we’re looking to flood the skies of Fargo/Moorhead with a big bunch of balloons. 321 balloons to be exact! The balloons will be blue and yellow, which are the universal colors of Down syndrome. What better way to raise heads and raise awareness?

We’ll be gathering in the GiGi’s parking lot at 4pm and handing out balloons. The release will happen at 4:30. Everyone is encouraged to wear blue and yellow, GiGi’s gear and/or some crazy socks. The socks are another way to raise awareness and celebrate our differences.

Just last week, a video went viral, featuring a father of a boy with Down syndrome. In it, the dad expresses remorse for not speaking up after hearing another dad tell his children that Down syndrome was an illness of not knowing anything.

Sadly, I’m sure many of us can relate to this father’s pain. Maybe we missed an opportunity, but thankfully, World Down Syndrome Day gives us another. The balloons and crazy socks help us start the conversation.

You don’t have to have Down syndrome or know someone with Down syndrome to take part in our World Down Syndrome Day celebration. In fact, 3/21 is the perfect chance to meet some of our families, hear our stories, and see what a blessing an extra chromosome can be. GiGi’s Playhouse welcomes everyone with open arms and lots of love.

So, mark it on your calendar, 3/21! No longer an ordinary day, but an extraordinary way to celebrate difference and spread awareness.

Specials thanks to Balloons and More and PraxAir Distribution for their support with this event!
