The Gift of Time and Heart: Volunteer Appreciation Month at GiGi’s
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and there’s no better time to recognize the incredible individuals who help make GiGi’s Playhouse El Paso a thriving, inclusive, and welcoming space for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
Our volunteers are at the center of everything we do. They lead with heart, serve with joy, and help bring our mission to life every single day.
Why Volunteers Matter
At GiGi’s, all of our programs are completely free. This is made possible thanks to the generosity of volunteers who commit their time, talents, and energy to helping others grow, learn, and thrive. Whether they’re tutoring in math, planning fundraisers, greeting families at the front desk, or leading strategic efforts behind the scenes, every volunteer plays a critical role in our success.
Our volunteers are not just helpers—they are mentors, cheerleaders, role models, and friends. They create safe, welcoming spaces where participants feel empowered to be themselves and reach their goals. They lift others up through consistent encouragement, patience, and genuine care. Their efforts help us deliver purposeful programs that build confidence, communication skills, independence, and joy.
Without them, there would be no GiGi’s Playhouse El Paso as we know it. Their commitment makes the dream of acceptance for all a reality—one hour, one smile, and one connection at a time.
Meet Three Volunteers Making a Big Impact
Cindy Silva Manzanares – Gala Chair

Cindy brings unmatched creativity, organization, and heart to her role as the Gala Chair for our annual i Have a Voice Gala. She manages everything from sponsorships and auction donations to décor and guest experience. Her passion for the mission shines through every detail of the event.
Thanks to her leadership, the gala has grown into one of our most successful and memorable fundraisers—raising the critical funds that keep our programs running. Cindy’s energy and love for the community are felt far beyond the ballroom. Her dedication helps ensure that individuals with Down syndrome continue to receive the support and recognition they deserve.
Kathy Turner – Math Tutor
Kathy is one of the guiding lights in our one-on-one math tutoring program, helping participants develop essential skills in a supportive and encouraging environment. She has a natural ability to connect with learners of all ages and make math approachable and fun.
Week after week, Kathy brings patience, warmth, and consistency to her sessions. She celebrates every small victory and adapts her teaching style to meet the unique needs of each student. Her commitment has helped many participants grow in confidence and ability—not just with numbers, but in themselves.

Linzui Vergara – Board President

As our Board President, Linzui provides strategic leadership that guides the overall direction of GiGi’s Playhouse El Paso. She’s a tireless advocate for inclusion and empowerment, and she plays a key role in ensuring that our mission stays at the forefront of every decision.
In addition to leading board meetings and shaping the future of the Playhouse, Linzui is deeply involved in the day-to-day spirit of the organization. She supports staff, volunteers, and families alike, helping build a culture where everyone feels seen, valued, and heard. Her leadership has helped strengthen our presence in the community and expand the impact of our programs.
