A Summer of Learning and Fun with Avery

This summer, Avery B.’s learning sessions with Doug B. took on a new twist—one that mixed math with fun, creativity, and hands-on experiences. When Avery, Avery’s family, and Doug planned for the summer semester, they agreed to keep things lighter while still reinforcing math skills in unique and engaging ways.

One highlight has been an ongoing card game with Avery, a member of Avery’s family, and Doug. The scores carry over week to week, keeping the competition exciting. Avery’s competitive spirit shines through, but he demonstrates great sportsmanship—gracious when he wins and understanding when he doesn’t. Looking ahead, Avery, Doug, and another member of Avery’s family are planning a visit to a golf simulator, where Avery will track and calculate his scores, adding another fun layer of math in action.

Perhaps the most exciting project has been Avery’s cooking adventures. Each week, Avery selects a recipe, creates a shopping plan, and leads a full grocery store trip. The process includes:

  • Avery choosing the recipe
  • Doug and Avery’s family calculating relative ingredient costs
  • A shopping list and budget prepared for Avery
  • Avery guiding the team through Kroger, finding items, and tracking costs

Through this, Avery applies multiple math skills: dividing when items are priced in bundles, multiplying when buying more than one of the same product, and adding and subtracting to stay within budget. Avery has mastered the shopping experience, navigating the store layout with confidence. Impressively, he has come in under budget both times and chose something special for his family with the extra money.

So far, Avery has successfully made a hearty meatloaf and a more ambitious dish—Roasted Cauliflower Burrito Bowls with homemade guacamole. Both meals turned out delicious, and Avery’s pride in completing the full process—planning, budgeting, shopping, cooking, and finally enjoying the food—was evident to everyone around him.

Doug shared that every session with Avery is filled with energy, joy, and learning. Avery’s determination and bright spirit make each week a true blessing. GiGi’s Playhouse is grateful to Doug B., Avery’s family, and especially Avery for reminding everyone that learning can be fun, practical, and deeply rewarding.
