Make an Impact That Lasts: Why Volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse Matters

At GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit, we believe in the power of human connection—and volunteers are the heartbeat of everything we do.
Each time a volunteer walks through our doors, they are not just giving their time. They are changing lives, building a more inclusive community, and helping individuals with Down syndrome reach their fullest potential. Whether you’re leading a literacy session, assisting with fitness programs, greeting families at the front desk, or helping behind the scenes, you are making an impact that matters.
Why Volunteer?
According to research from Independent Sector, the estimated value of a volunteer hour in the United States is $31.80 (2024). But the value of volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse goes far beyond numbers:
- 100% of our programs are FREE to families, thanks in part to volunteers who help us provide high-quality, consistent support.
- The Corporation for National and Community Service has shown that volunteering is linked to lower stress, better health, and increased happiness—for the volunteer!

Volunteers Help Us Fill the Gap
More than 400,000 people with Down syndrome live in the United States today, and many families still face barriers to accessing the educational and developmental supports their loved ones need. GiGi’s Playhouse fills that gap—but we can’t do it alone.
Each time you show up to volunteer, you’re helping us:
- Provide 1:1 literacy and math tutoring that improves academic outcomes and builds confidence
- Run therapeutic and social programs that increase motor skills, communication, and independence
- Create a place where every participant feels seen, celebrated, and supported
And the beauty? You don’t need special qualifications—just a heart for service and a belief in acceptance for all.
Real Stories. Real Impact.
- A volunteer tutor helped a young participant read their first book independently—and celebrated with a standing ovation.
- A program assistant built a friendship with a teen participant that led to more confidence and better communication skills.
- A front desk greeter made every family feel welcome, seen, and valued from the moment they walked in.
These everyday moments change lives.

We Need YOU.
We’re currently looking for:
- Program assistants (GiGiFIT, LMNOP, Leaps & Bounds, and more)
- Literacy and math tutors
- Administrative support volunteers
- Event and fundraising volunteers
- Committee Members
- Board Members
Whether you can give an hour a week or help with special events throughout the year—you are needed.
