Volunteer Spotlight: Angie Hockey
Phenomenal Human Alert!
Back in May of 2023, GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit received a visit from a group of young students, parents, and other members of the Lone Pine Elementary PTO. They had just finished a “Crazy Sock Day” fundraiser for World Down Syndrome Day, and came to deliver a generous donation. The parents and kids toured our Playhouse and learned all about the programs we provide and the people we support. Great questions were asked and many seemed interested in staying involved.
One parent in particular was true to her word, and attended our volunteer orientation just 5 days later. Since then, Angie Hockey has actively volunteered with two of our children’s’ programs: LMNOP and Special Olympics Young Athletes. Angie has been consistent, dedicated, fun, enthusiastic, thoughtful, reliable, and creative. All of the children and other volunteers just adore her. We are so lucky she found our community and jumped right in!
Please enjoy our interview with Angie below…
Hi! Let’s start with, what’s your daytime occupation?
I am currently a “stay at home mom” to 3 boys – 1 in elementary, 1 in middle & 1 in high school. I am also now on three different PTO’s for each of their schools!
What are some of your favorite hobbies and interests?
I am weirdly obsessed with jigsaw puzzles and about to try my hand at Amigurumi crocheting.
What’s a fun fact about you that might surprise us?
I have lived in 4 different countries – (Michigan) USA, (Coogee Beach) Australia, (Nanging) China & (Mexico City) Mexico.
What is it about the mission of GiGi’s Playhouse that appeals to you, personally?
I really love that GiGi’s Playhouse provides programs for both kids & adults at no cost to their families.
What do you love about being at GiGi’s? What keeps you coming back?
It is such a joy to watch all in the GiGi’s family grow together and have such a special place of community with each other.
How has volunteering here impacted your life?
I’ve met so many amazing people between the GiGi’s crew, participants, and their families. I feel very lucky that I get to be part of this community.
Do you have a favorite memory from volunteering?
Parachute time is one of my favorites. Seeing all the kids so happy jumping and running around under it is so fun.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse?
GiGi’s Playhouse is such a great place to volunteer. There are so many opportunities to get involved and you will not regret being part of this special community.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” -Aesop
Angie seems to live the wisdom of this quote, as she shares her time, care, and joy so generously with our families. We are very grateful for all the good she does in the world, and especially in our Playhouse!
Are you feeling inspired??
