Volunteer Spotlight: Jim Decker

This month we’re sending a heartfelt shout out to a wonderful man who works faithfully behind the scenes at GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit.

Jim and his grandson, Noah

Jim Decker is the grandfather of one of our young participants, Noah, and the last few months he has donated his time and talents as our Maintenance Man. From changing the door code and all the lightbulbs, to hanging speakers, updating bathrooms, mounting a complicated art project, and more – Jim’s to-do list seems never-ending. His generosity of time, knowledge, skill, and resources saves us a ton of money; money we can instead put toward providing free programs for individuals with Down syndrome. As you know, an organization like GiGi’s Playhouse takes a village to operate, and we are incredibly grateful to have Jim in ours.

Get to know him more below!

Hi Jim, what is/was your daytime occupation and where?

I am currently retired. I spent 20 years in the US Navy, then 11 years in corporate management, and 7 years as a small business owner.

What are some of your favorite hobbies and interests?

I enjoy reading and helping others.

What’s a fun fact about you that might surprise us?

I have a private pilot license.

How did you find out about GiGi’s Playhouse?

My grandson is enrolled in LMNOP and the Amina Grace Speech Tutoring Program.

What is it about the mission of GiGi’s Playhouse that appeals to you, personally?

People helping people.

What do you enjoy about being at GiGi’s? What keeps you coming back?

I am always looking for a new challenge and the opportunity to help others. It brings me joy to complete projects and make improvements.

Why do you believe people with Down syndrome are an important part of our community?

They are people like everyone else, with special needs but offering special talents to those willing to engage with them.

Do you have a favorite quote?

Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.

~ Pope John Paul II

Thank you, Jim, for your thoughtfulness and always going above and beyond to keep our facility operating beautifully.

Do you want to get involved?

We have many different volunteer opportunities that would suit your interests and time allowance. Please join us for volunteer orientation, hosted every 1st Saturday of the month. If you have any questions, email volunteerdetroit@gigisplayhouse.org or call the Playhouse at 248-557-9899.
