Join Detroit’s GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge

Would you like to be a part of a mission to help make the world a more accepting place for individuals of all abilities? Then, you don’t want to miss this opportunity! On June 5th GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit is teaming up with Playhouses across the country and in Mexico to unite 1 Million supporters in a physical and social MOVEment called the GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge!

The NEED for Acceptance

The power of acceptance – feeling like you belong, are welcome, seen as capable and worthy of being a part of something.  Whether we admit it out loud or not, most of us want to be accepted. Whether at school, at work, within our families and among our friends, we want to belong

On top of that personal need to belong, we live in a world that is often separated based on differences. It is time for people to come together regardless of race, gender, diagnosis, ability, sexual orientation, or religion. Our world needs universal ACCEPTANCE for all people.

For our loved ones with Down syndrome, acceptance can often be more difficult to experience. But for those of us impacted by someone with Down syndrome, we know differences should be celebrated. Differences make our world a more beautiful place. Differences help us be more accepting, more open-minded, more… human! This is why WE, the people of the Down syndrome community, are challenging YOU to move for acceptance – to prove that every person should be accepted for who they are.

The GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge: a physical and social movement for acceptance!

This event challenges people to actively move for the change that we so desperately need! Any type of physical movement can be used as your pledge to help create a more accepting world. You can walk, run, jump, swim, ride, lift, play a sport, go to the gym, and more! There are three ways you can participate:

  1. Register to host your own community event at a time that works for you, from now through June 5, 2021
  2. Join our socially distanced inperson event on June 5 at Seaholm High School Track(COVID safety measures will be in place – masks and distancing.)
  3. Become a Sponsor of our Detroit GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge

Hosting Your Own Community Event

A wonderful way to raise funds and spread awareness for the Acceptance Challenge is to host your own community event. A personal community event can be anything that brings people together virtually or in-person. For example, you can get your sports team or club together to raise funds during a meeting, game or practice that is dedicated to acceptance! The options are endless, from Girl Scout / Boy Scout Troops, track teams or school phys ed classes, bike or running clubs, etc.

You can also plan your own walk/run/bike event for your friends and family join in virtually or in person at a local metro park or neighborhood. Coming together in safe way while spreading the message of acceptance will have a positive impact on those participating, as well as those who may see you!

To create your own community event, register as either a team or individual fundraiser. Once registered, your fundraising page presents you the opportunity to Host a Community Event. You can choose to collect funds on the registration page or collect donations on the day of your event. And donations for your personal community event can be very reasonable as any and all amounts are welcome. For example, a kids’ group could be $5 – 10 per person to participate. And every community event that raises $321 or more will receive a lawn sign thanking them for choosing to believe in acceptance.

June 5th Event at Seaholm High School

Another way to participate is to register and create your team to attend our GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge Event Saturday, June 5th from 9-11 AM at the Seaholm High School Track in Birmingham. The event will provide us the opportunity to spread the message of acceptance in a socially distanced outdoor venue.

Sponsor this Movement for Acceptance

Join us in spreading this important message of acceptance by becoming a GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge sponsor. With sponsor levels ranging from $250 up to $2500, you will align your brand or name with a critical mission for our time!

To the Moon and Back…Twice

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic GiGi’s Playhouse launched GiGi’s Step to Accept, held in June 2020.  Sixty Playhouses came together to spread awareness and acceptance. Collectively we traveled to the MOON AND BACK (TWICE!) with over ONE BILLION STEPS logged.

From Poland to Sweden to the UK and Mexico, and all over the US, almost 100,000 people were proudly walking, running, and riding. In doing so the entire GiGi’s network raised $1,301,121 for Global Acceptance and filled a critical funding gap when all our in-person fundraising events were cancelled.  Locally we had 12 teams and 100 people join our Detroit Playhouse to walk, run and bike for acceptance.

And in 2021, TOGETHER we can accomplish even more!  How many more people and countries will participate this year? The more people that commit to MOVE, the more we will be able to MOVE the world toward global acceptance for ALL!
