Fitness Goals for the New Year? GiGiFIT Has You Covered!
People with Down syndrome tend to be more relaxed when their muscles are at rest, (hypotonia or low muscle tone) than their peers in the same state of relaxation. This does not mean they are not strong, just that their muscle structure is different. This may mean they rest more in a slouched position with hips turned out and abdominals relaxed. Our GiGiFIT programs have been developed by a Doctor of Physical Thearpy, who is also a personal trainer. She has taken her knowledge of the muscle structure in people with hypotonia and applied it to our amazing GiGiFIT Program.
Before the 10 week session begins, participants fill out a fitness questionnaire and we take notes of what they are able to do. As the 10 weeks progress, we focus on those areas of the questionnaire where there may have been some struggles and work towards their #bestofall moments of progress. Participants really take pride in increasing their stamina, strength, and abilities in other areas of a healthy lifestyle.
The past fall session, our teen and adult participants have been partially in person and partially virtual, but our great program leader keeps everyone engaged no matter where the program takes place. Our GiGiFIT Adult & Teen Winter 2021 session will start on Tuesday January 5, 2021 and end on Tuesday, March 29, 2021. Ideally, we would love to have this program in person but we are prepared to stay virtual if we need to. Don’t wait, applications close December 22, 2020 at 10PM!
