We found out that Worth had Down syndrome when I was 11 weeks pregnant. I can still remember how his whole life flashed in front of me. I wondered who he would become, what activities he would be interested in, what his voice would sound like, if he would be able to connect with his sisters, with us, how the world would embrace him, or not…? I already loved him, but I remember searching for a community so that I could learn how to show up for him and advocate for him. I wanted to hear from the source, people who were raising kids with Down syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I connected with parents, of course I heard so much about the importance of early intervention therapies, but a close second was that I had to join a GiGi\u2019s Playhouse chapter. We made the move from the city to Deerfield when Worth was around 9 months old and started attending LMNOP, which was led by his speech therapist, Jill Rabin. From the first minutes we entered the Playhouse, we felt this sense of belonging and shared purpose with the kids and parents who joined us. It\u2019s a quiet but bold understanding amongst us that lets us know we are not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We walk every year for GiGi\u2019s Playhouse Deerfield so that we can continue to feel that feeling every time we walk through the doors. We walk for new parents learning of a Down syndrome diagnosis who feel like they don\u2019t know where to turn. We walk for Worth and all his homies with extra chromies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
