This weekend, at our 4th Annual Deerfield Gala, I was reminded once again of the incredible power of those ripples. As I stood at the podium, looking out at a room filled with friends, family, and supporters, my heart was overflowing. Seeing so many of my favorite people gathered, united by a shared purpose, reminded me exactly why this Playhouse exists: to raise awareness, create acceptance, and change the way the world views Down syndrome.\u00a0Every dollar raised that night goes directly back into our Deerfield Playhouse, supporting the free programs we offer and, most importantly, the incredible participants who bring our mission to life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Vision Turned Reality<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n When we first opened our doors six years ago, our vision was simple but powerful: to create a Playhouse rooted in acceptance. We wanted it to feel like home. A place where strangers become friends, where confidence replaces hesitation, and where every little milestone is celebrated with joy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, I can say with pride that vision is alive and thriving. I\u2019ve seen it in the friendships that have blossomed, in the confidence that grows week by week, and in the strength of families who show up for one another. The progress we see, what we call purposeful progressions, doesn\u2019t happen overnight. Sometimes it takes weeks, months, or even years. But when it happens, it\u2019s magic. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n The Ripples That Inspire Me<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n This year, we focused on ripples<\/em>\u2014because I\u2019ve learned that every single connection to the Playhouse creates ripples of impact, often in ways we can\u2019t predict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The very first ripple came from a brave mom who made a promise to her daughter, GiGi<\/a>. That promise has evolved into a global movement: 62 Playhouses <\/a>across the country and an online platform<\/a> that reaches families in more than 80 countries. It was that ripple that inspired our team to open the Deerfield Playhouse six years ago, and it\u2019s the reason I am here today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n There are so many stories of ripples within our own walls. Like Laney, a remarkable little girl whose presence has sparked love, laughter, and connection throughout our community. From four tables and a party bus at the Gala, to the custom Lite Brite that lights up our sensory room, to her Grandparents building our mini playhouse, to the friendships she\u2019s made, to the way she inspires everyone she meets, Laney\u2019s ripple is everywhere. If you\u2019ve met her, you\u2019ve been changed by her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I think of Jill<\/a>, our volunteer Speech and Language Pathologist, who encouraged a family to visit the Playhouse when their son Conner was just ten days old. That one gentle push changed everything, for them, and for me now six years later leaning on them as some of my closest friends. When Conner\u2019s grandmother learned about his diagnosis she called and leaned on her best friend for support. This phone call would prove to be one of the most important when just a few years later that same best friend called her to let her know she had a new grandson, and he was also diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth. Conner led us to Mason, whose ripple brought us EDP<\/a>, our corporate partner that surprised us by wrapping a truck in GiGi\u2019s logos to spread awareness. It reached even further when just a few weeks before the truck was to be unveiled, the owner of EDP welcomed his granddaughter Zelda, who was also born with Down syndrome. Lives touched everywhere you look. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And then there\u2019s Jazlyn\u2019s mom, who walked into our LMNOP program and quickly became the Playhouse \u201cmom,\u201d the one welcoming new families, offering hugs, and making sure no one ever feels alone. Her ripple has created a softer landing place for so many who needed it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n You Matter <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n As I looked around the room at the gala, I couldn\u2019t help but think: every single person here is a ripple. Whether you came through friendship, family, work, or sheer calling, your presence matters. You\u2019re part of this community, and you are changing lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Not everyone who walks through our doors has a direct connection to Down syndrome, but somehow, they find us. And when they do, their ripple spreads, bringing new energy, new stories, and new heart into our Playhouse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n As I reflect on the gala, I am reminded that it doesn\u2019t take something grand to make a difference. Sometimes it\u2019s a smile, an invitation, or one small act of courage. But those ripples add up. And together, they are creating a world where every person is accepted, valued, and celebrated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Thank you for helping us change the way the world views Down syndrome.
