Volunteer of the Month – Candace!
Candace’s journey with GiGi’s Playhouse began with a feeling—an energy and sense of belonging she couldn’t ignore. After attending countless GiGi’s events with her boyfriend’s brother, Patrick, she knew she wanted to be a bigger part of this incredible community. Since then, she’s become a dedicated volunteer, bringing her quiet confidence, warm spirit, and easygoing nature to every session. Whether she’s laughing with friends at Games with Friends Adult or diving into a game of Headbandz, Candace makes every moment at the Playhouse meaningful. Her love for GiGi’s shines through in her deep connections, the joy she brings to every interaction, and her genuine appreciation for the friendships she’s built. We’re so grateful for Candace’s heart, and we couldn’t be happier to celebrate her as our Volunteer of the Month!

Tell us about you!
I am a judicial attorney at the 8th District Court of Appeals! Outside of work and Gigi’s, I enjoy traveling, listening to live music, reading books, and taking long walks along Lake Erie.
How did you hear about GiGi’s?
My boyfriend’s brother, Patrick, has been attending GiGi’s programs for many years. After so many Project Pulse performances and many fun times at the annual Brews and Beats, I felt a certain energy and vibe that I wanted to feel more than a couple of times a year. So, I went to a volunteer orientation about 9 months ago and haven’t looked back.
What programs have you volunteered with?
Games with Friends Adult two times a month, and I very much hope to catch a Fantastic Friends Karaoke sometime soon.
Why did you start volunteering?
I started volunteering because I always had fun and felt very fulfilled when attending GiGi’s events and wanted to be more involved.
Why do you enjoy volunteering?
I continue volunteering because I truly look forward to it every time I go! I never know what sort of fun memories I will leave with, but I always do.
Why do you love GiGi’s Playhouse?
The community is unmatched. My favorite thing is seeing familiar faces, catching up with my friends with Down syndrome, and watching them grow, learn, engage, and be themselves. I also love meeting new friends and watching them become a part of our great group of adults.
Do you have a favorite memory at the Playhouse? If so, what is it?
About two weeks ago, while we were wrapping up Games with Friends, someone started singing Lean on Me and everyone in the room dropped everything and began singing along.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to a new volunteer?
Take the time to get to know everyone. It is so fulfilling to be able to greet your friends and ask them how their school/work/sports/etc are going! GiGi’s is so full of interesting and worldly individuals who have many different hobbies and interests, and it’s so cool to hear what people have been up to.
As a volunteer, what is one thing you’d say to a new family who is curious about GiGi’s Playhouse?
There is not a more welcoming and helpful place in the world. The variety of programming, resources, knowledge, and community that GiGi’s has to offer truly has something for everyone.
Candace, thank you for bringing your warmth and kindness to GiGi’s Playhouse. Your ability to effortlessly connect, engage, and share joy with our friends makes such a meaningful impact. We are so grateful for you and all that you do to make our community even brighter!
