During the GiGi\u2019s Professional program, our interns learned all about Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is an African American holiday celebrated from December 26th – January 1st. There are 7 days of Kwanzaa, each representing one of The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Umoja (Unity)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Kujichagulia (Self-determination)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Ujima (Working together)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Ujamaa (Supporting each other)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Nia (Purpose)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Kuumba (Creativity)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Imani (Faith)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    To celebrate Kwanzaa, a candle is lit each day that represents one of The 7 Principles. The holiday is also celebrated through Karamu (feasts), music, dance, poetry, and narratives. The last day is dedicated to reflection and recommitment to The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    After talking about Kwanzaa, our interns shared what they learned with each other. Here is some of what they said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou light candles to celebrate\u201d <\/em>– Diego<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cIt is a week long holiday that celebrates African American culture\u201d<\/em> – Quincy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cJanuary 1st is the last day of Kwanzaa, which is also New Years Day\u201d<\/em> – Colleen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cKwanzaa is celebrated for 1 whole week. People spend time together and be with their friends and family\u201d<\/em> – Karen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cOne of the principles of Kwanzaa is supporting each other.\u201d<\/em> – Sam<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cIt is a holiday that celebrates African American culture\u201d<\/em> – Luis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cKwanzaa is celebrated December 26-January 1 every year\u201d<\/em> – Ryan
