Introducing our Team Members: Erica

Here at GiGi’s Playhouse Charleston, we have a team of amazing leaders working to bring this wonderful nonprofit to Charleston (the very FIRST in South Carolina too!). We are so proud of each and every member and the work and dedication they bring to the table. They are making this dream a reality! For the year of 2023, we decided to dedicate our blog to getting to know each team member and learn about how Down syndrome has changed their lives.  

Meet Erica C.

When you are expecting a child, you just don’t know who may be arriving. It’s the ol’ box-a-chocolates mentality, right Forrest? Now, Joey’s arrival brought its own set of challenges, but it also brought so much more. In dealing with those challenges, our eyes are opened to the challenges of others. We start to celebrate the work someone may have put into a milestone rather than comparing that accomplishment to others. The community Joey entered us into is like no other. All parents seek the support of fellow travelers on their path, but other Down syndrome community parents just add that something extra…”extra” being our signature component as it were! Since having Joey, I have changed career paths and social circles, but these were additions, not substitutions. I cannot imagine my life any other way. Going anywhere with Joey is like going with a celebrity – we will wave to and meet as many people as possible. If everyone had as much empathy and desire to share love as Joey does, the world would be a better place. I know my home is.
