It’s just a basic toilet paper commercial, but to me it’s a big deal. See, this particular commercial has a girl in it with Down Syndrome. That’s a huge deal. It got me thinking about how amazing it is that Grace was born in such a time as this.
I remember Grace’s first Christmas there was a Fisher Price ad that had a toddler girl in it who happened to have Down syndrome. (Yes, Grace owns that toy 😂). A few months later we were watching Sesame Street, and there were kids on it with differing abilities. My heart soared. Today companies like Target, Walmart, Primary, Fisher Price, and so many others are featuring kids with Down syndrome as well as kids with other varying abilities in their ads. This is huge.
I’m so thankful to the parents and advocates who have walked this journey before me. The ones that have fought for inclusion and acceptance. Because of them, we have programs to help our kids from day one. We have amazing programs like GiGi’s Playhouse Canton that provides free programming to individuals with Down syndrome regardless of income. Schools are now becoming more and more inclusive. Things aren’t perfect, but I believe it’s heading in the right direction. When we take the time to remember that we’re more alike than we are different, inclusion becomes easier. I remember being so scared of how people would treat Grace, and I can honestly say we’ve never had a negative interaction. I think there’s a good chance that this air of inclusion happening lately is partly why. Plus she’s pretty stinking cute so that helps!”

Our hope for 2020 is to see more people become inclusive by accepting of others for who they are and their different abilities. Although there are multiple companies who are featuring people with disabilities, we still a way’s to go in the real world. Let’s all agree to dedicate this decade to being Generation G, be accepting, be generous and be kind!

One of our mother’s, Riki, wrote this awesome piece about the Angel Soft toilet paper commercial. https://www.ispot.tv/ad/oRqa/angel-soft-morning-routine “So a few minutes ago I was in the living room picking up toys and this commercial caught my attention.
