{"id":142459,"date":"2026-06-18T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/canton\/?p=142459"},"modified":"2026-04-03T11:01:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T15:01:21","slug":"proprioceptive-sensory-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/canton\/2026\/06\/18\/proprioceptive-sensory-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Proprioceptive Sensory System\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"791\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/canton\/files\/2026\/03\/Proprioception-791x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-142471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/canton\/files\/2026\/03\/Proprioception-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/canton\/files\/2026\/03\/Proprioception-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/canton\/files\/2026\/03\/Proprioception-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/canton\/files\/2026\/03\/Proprioception-1187x1536.jpg 1187w, https:\/\/gigisplayhouse.org\/canton\/files\/2026\/03\/Proprioception.jpg 1545w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proprioception&nbsp;is one of our \u201chidden\u201d&nbsp;senses but&nbsp;is always communicating with our brain and body.&nbsp;Our proprioceptive receptors&nbsp;are located in&nbsp;our joints and muscles, so every time our body moves&nbsp;or our posture shifts, those receptors talk to our brain!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proprioception helps us understand our bodies, learn new skills, and use our bodies in a coordinated manner.&nbsp;These following terms are&nbsp;very important&nbsp;terms to consider when thinking about proprioception and help us engage in activities that are purposeful and meaningful to us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Motor planning&nbsp;or praxis<\/em>&nbsp;refers to the ability to&nbsp;execute motor movements in a&nbsp; coordinated and organized&nbsp;way.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When motor planning is impaired or delayed, we may struggle to use both of our hands together for tasks like cutting with scissors, catching a ball, completing a puzzle, washing the dishes,&nbsp;and taking a shower.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Body awareness or body scheme<\/em>&nbsp;refers to&nbsp;the brain\u2019s&nbsp;unconscious map of the physical body.&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When our body awareness is impaired, we may struggle to navigate around our environment without bumping into walls or tripping over objects on the floor,&nbsp;move&nbsp;our limbs without looking at them, or&nbsp;use&nbsp;appropriate force&nbsp;when manipulating objects.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Heavy work&nbsp;<\/em>refers to activities that require a lot of&nbsp;muscles and joints to work together.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heavy work\u00a0activities, like pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying, provide a lot of proprioceptive input to the body, helping to calm the\u00a0body,\u00a0and regulate\u00a0the nervous system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proprioception allows us to get dressed in the morning, squeeze toothpaste onto our toothbrush, tie our shoes, carry groceries inside,&nbsp;play outside, sit upright at our desk in school, and climb on equipment at&nbsp;the playground.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Proprioceptive Activities:<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many ways we can provide proprioceptive input in school, in the therapeutic setting, and at home.
