Volunteer Spotlight – Claire

GiGi’s Playhouse Annapolis is honored to introduce a volunteer who has gone above and beyond for our Playhouse. Claire started volunteering with us last year and has been a literacy tutor for the past two sessions. She also is on the 2023 Youth Board and created a pop up basketball program in December at Archbishop Spalding High School. We are so grateful for Claire!

What are your hobbies and interests?: Reading, cooking, golf

Why did you start volunteering with GiGi’s Playhouse?: I had heard about it from my mom and it sounded like a really rewarding experience.

What is your favorite part about GiGi’s Playhouse?: My favorite part is playing and interacting with all the participants and volunteers. I love that I’ve had the opportunity to meet all sorts of wonderful new friends since I started volunteering with GiGi’s.

What about the mission of GiGi’s Playhouse appeals to you, personally?: The global message of acceptance really resonates with me because I think that we are all one community and love and tolerance is the most important think we can put out into the world.

How has volunteering here impacted your life?: My general outlook on life and demeanor has become so much more positive. I’ve learned so much from the different participants I’ve had the blessing of spending time with and the most memorable part of all of those experiences is the positivity and optimism that the participants radiate.

Why do you believe people with Down syndrome are an important part of our community?: I think people with Down syndrome have such a unique perspective on life and the world and it’s one that we can all learn from and try to implement in our own lives. This outlook and positivity they put out into the world is really something special and plays an important role in the community.

Do you have a favorite quote?: “spread love everywhere you go, let no one ever come to you without leaving happier”- Mother Teresa

Why would you tell people to volunteer with GiGi’s Playhouse?: I would tell people that it is an incredibly welcoming and genuine community. People of all backgrounds are welcomed at GiGi’s, which creates a very fun atmosphere for both participants and volunteers. Volunteering with GiGi’s Playhouse is the most fulfilling working experience I have ever had.
