Participant Best of All – International Explorer Alicia

This month’s participant #bestofall goes to Alicia!

We love seeing GiGi’s participants becoming strong leaders. Alicia is a very outgoing and capable young woman. When she is not at her day job working at a local school, she serves as a GiGi’s Playhouse Intern. Alicia is always enthusiastically coming up with new ideas and has a willingness to help with any project!

As no one is really traveling right now, GiGi’s Playhouse Annapolis decided we will be armchair travelers! We’ve started a new Fantastic Friends group called “International Explorers”, where participants learn about different countries and their cultural traditions.

Alicia was quick to offer to share about her Korean heritage with her peers. She made an incredibly thorough PowerPoint presentation, taught participants about Korean culture and traditions, money, the flag, proper bowing, how to read Korean writing, listening to BTS music, and she wore her beautiful Korean traditional dress. Everyone was so impressed with her presentation and learned a lot about her culture! Alicia shared that she enjoys presenting to her friends and guests at GiGi’s, “Because I can see they are really interested in learning about Korean culture, language, and the music keeps them moving and dancing as did the martial arts!

From a GiGi’s LMNOP participant’s Grandparent volunteer; “Alicia is an amazing young woman. I was so impressed watching her confidently present her power point on Korea. She engaged all participants by having everyone match and pronounce words. All participants joined in as she taught taekwondo moves. At the end we all enjoyed a Korean treat using chopsticks. As a grandparent I am excited and hopeful that all of my grandchildren will be accepted and encouraged to live their best lives.”

We ended the program dancing Gangnam style as well as trying some Korean-inspired delicacies. What a fun way to learn about Global Acceptance for All!

Fantastic Friends International Explorers will next travel to meet GiGi’s participants at GiGi’s Queretaro, Mexico! They will teach Annapolis participants about the Mexican culture and traditions as well as how to make guacamole! Join us either in person at the Playhouse, or virtually, as we partner up to learn from GiGi’s friends south of the border!
