Down syndrome, Syracuse, family support

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”

– Wayne W. Dyer

Special education and disability studies has touched my life in many different ways. From my own diagnosis of a learning disability in reading, writing and math to the birth of my twin sister with Down Syndrome and autism. Understanding disability and its perception in society is an ongoing project for me. I earned my undergraduate degree at Le Moyne College in history, secondary and special education in May of 2012. I also earned my master’s degree from Syracuse University in Teaching and Curriculum in May of 2014. With a combination of theory and personal experience, my goal is to explain to the siblings who have a sister or brother with Down Syndrome, that they are not alone.

Through GiGi’s Playhouse, I will lead a one hour session every third Saturday of the month that helps siblings gain a greater understanding of Down Syndrome. Through a variety of activities such as small group discussion, crafts and gym activities I would like to change the way the siblings perceive Down Syndrome. I would like to create a community of siblings that can share different life experiences regarding their special needs siblings. ~ Michael Knittel

Thank you Michael for you time and passion, we are so glad you are here!
